{"id":4051,"date":"2020-02-05T13:08:42","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T13:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/?p=4051"},"modified":"2020-02-09T19:00:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-09T19:00:50","slug":"croatia-bulldogs-turkey-knights-pro-chess-league-2020-round-3-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/2020\/02\/05\/croatia-bulldogs-turkey-knights-pro-chess-league-2020-round-3-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Croatia Bulldogs &#8211; Turkey Knights, Pro Chess League 2020, Round 3 Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/event\/croatia-bulldogs-vs-turkey-knights\/\">Croatia Bulldogs &#8211; Turkey Knights<\/a><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After two defeats in the two openings rounds of the Pro Chess League 2020, in round 3 of the Pro Chess League 2020, on January 23rd, 2020, at 14:45 CET (05:45 Pacific Time), Croatia Bulldogs meet the team who, up to that point, had one draw and one win &#8211; Turkey Knights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Round report and highlights follow.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Team Lineups<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the fact that the first two matches didn&#8217;t go in their favor, due to the obligations of the team members, Croatia Bulldogs were unable to strengthen their average team rating and decided to go for their standard &#8220;super IM&#8221; lineup, that proved to be so successful in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/table\/pro-chess-league-qualifier-2020\/\">Pro Chess League 2020 Qualifier:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/tuan-minh-le\/\">IM Tuan Minh Le<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/leon-livaic\/\">IM Leon Livai\u0107<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/jadranko-plenca\/\">IM Jadranko Plen\u010da<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/sven-tica\/\">IM Sven Tica<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other hand, Turkey Knights sent more or less a standard lineup, consisting of three GMs and &#8220;only&#8221; one IM on the final board:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/alexander-ipatov\/\">GM Alexander Ipatov<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/batuhan-dastan\/\">GM Batuhan Dastan<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/francesco-rambaldi\/\">GM Francesco Rambaldi<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chessentials.com\/Croatia_Bulldogs\/player\/cem-kaan-gokerkan\/\">IM Cem Kaan Gokerkan<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In contrast to the previous matches, the rating gap between the two teams wasn&#8217;t at all pronounced, with both teams revolving around 2550. Due to the fact that they had 3 GMs in their lineup and that they started the league with good results, the Turkey Knights were perhaps slight favourites, but the Qualifier and the previous rounds showed that Bulldogs will not go down without a fight.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Round 1<\/h2>\n<p>Initially, nothing seemed to indicate that the match might swing our way. Nf3 Nf6 { But this definitely is a surprise. Minh Le deviates from his favourite Dragon. } 3. e5 { The most principled, leading to a fascinating and sharp struggle. } 3... Nd5 4. Nc3 e6 5. Nxd5 exd5 6. d4 Nc6 { This is what Black usually does - sacrifices the d5 pawn in hope of obtaining active play for his pieces. It is a great choice for a game with lower time control. } 7. dxc5 Bxc5 8. Qxd5 d6 9. Be3?! { And this move allows Black to solve all his problems and even end up better . } (9. exd6 { Is definitely critical, leading to a complicated theoretical discussion after } 9... Qb6) 9... Be6 { Now Black has developed fully. } 10. Qd2 Bxe3 11. Qxe3 dxe5 12. Bd3 (12. Nxe5 { White might have missed that e5 pawn is taboo due to } 12... Qa5+) 12... O-O?! { But this is a mistake - Ng5 was a serious threat here. } (12... h6 { or }) (12... f6 { to control g5 had to be played }) 13. O-O?! { Returning the favor. } (13. Ng5 { Would have been very uncomfortable for Black. }) 13... f6 { Now Black is fine and the game is approximately equal. } 14. Rfd1 Qe7 15. Be4 Rfd8 16. a3 Rac8 17. h3 Bf7 18. b4 { It is debatable whether this is a gain of space or overextension. } 18... b6 19. Rac1 b5 { It is not clear whether c4 was a threat, though } 20. Rxd8+ Qxd8 21. Qd3 Qxd3 22. cxd3 Ne7 23. Rxc8+ Nxc8 { The endgame should be a draw, objectively, but White does have three pawn islands.. } 24. d4 { ... so he gets rid of them at once } 24... Nd6 { .. or does he? } 25. Bc6 e4 { Playing for the win, which is double edged, as the d-pawn is now passed. } 26. Nd2 f5 27. g4 g6 28. Kg2 Kg7 29. Kg3 Kf6 30. gxf5 { It was probably better to do without this exchange, although it is still drawn, objectively. } 30... Nxf5+ 31. Kf4 Nxd4 32. Bxe4 (32. Nxe4+ { Was probably better }) 32... g5+ 33. Ke3 Nf5+ 34. Kd3 Be6 { Now Black's pieces are active and the h3 pawn starts feeling the heat } 35. Nf3?! { With the idea of playing h4, but this is probably another inaccuracy } (35. Bc6 Nd6 36. Bg2 { It was mandatory to stay passive and keep the route for the bishop on c6 open to g2. Black is better, but not clearly winning }) 35... h5 36. Bc6 Nd6 { Now White is unable to play Bg2. } (36... Ne7 { Winning the h3 pawn, was maybe even better }) 37. h4 gxh4 38. Nxh4 Kg5 { Black's passed h-pawn is very dangerous } 39. Nf3+ Kf4 40. Kd4 Nc4!? { Great tactical play, creating additional problems. } 41. Ne1 (41. Bxb5 { Loses to } 41... Kxf3) 41... Nxa3 42. Ng2+ Kf5 43. Kc5?! { Probably also not a good idea, moving the king away from the kingside and the e5 square } 43... Ke5 (43... Kg4 { Was maybe a better try }) 44. Be8?! (44. f4+ { Was an unexpected defensive resource which is not easy for a human to play. } 44... Kf6 (44... Kf5 45. Bf3 { And it is hard to make progress }) 45. Nh4 { And it is hard to make progress }) 44... Bg4 { Now the bishop will be activated and the h3 pawn will become dangerous } 45. Ne3? { Definitely the losing move } (45. f4+ { For better or for worse, this had to be tried. After } 45... Kf5 46. Bd7+ Kf6 47. Bc6 { White can still resist }) 45... Bf3 { Now it is all over. The h-pawn decides the game } 46. Bd7 h4 47. Ng4+ (47. Bh3 Kf4 { And Black will move the bishop and play Kf3 next, with decisive advantage }) 47... Kf4 48. Nf6 Bg2 49. Nd5+ Bxd5 50. Kxd5 Kf3 51. It is amazing how Minh Le managed to outplay his opponent and how difficult it was to detect the key error even after the game. O-O-O bxc4? { But this is a definite mistake. Black voluntarily rids himself of the flexible pawn chain on the queenside. } 9. Bh6! { Very energetic! } 9... Bh8? { Desperation or provocation? } (9... d5 { Is more normal, but after } 10. h4 { Black has a difficult position, as well. }) 10. Bxf8 { Very human. } (10. h4 { Was maybe even stronger. }) 10... Kxf8 11. e5 Nd5 12. Bxc4 { The game is virtually decided, but there is still a lot to come } 12... Nxc3 13. Qxc3 d6 14. f4 Nd7 15. Nf3 Nb6 16. Bb3 a5? { Blundering another pawn. } 17. Ng5 d5 18. e6?! (18. Nxh7+ { Was objectively stronger }) 18... fxe6? (18... Bxe6 { For better or for worse, this had to be played. After } 19. Nxe6+ fxe6 20. Bc2 (20. Qh3 a4 21. Qxh7 Bg7 { And things aren't at all clear }) 20... a4 { The position is suddenly more complicated. }) 19. Qh3 { Now Black is helpless against the onsluahgt } 19... h5 (19... a4 { Doesn't work because of mating threats } 20. Qxh7) 20. Qd3 Qe8 21. Rhe1 a4 22. Bc2 Nc4 23. Nxe6+? { A serious mistake. } (23. Rxe6 { Would end the game. After } 23... Bxe6 24. Nxe6+ Kg8 25. Nc7 { It is all over }) 23... Bxe6 24. Rxe6 Bf6? { Missing his chance. } (24... Qb8 { Would have been highly unpleasant, threatening to take on f4 and the mate on b2. White would have to find the very precise } 25. Rf1 Qxb2+ 26. Kd1 { To keep his edge }) 25. Qxg6 { Now the queen exchange is virtually forced and White can breathe the sigh of relief. } 25... Qxg6 26. Bxg6 Rb8 27. Re2 c5 { Still trying to confuse the issue... } 28. dxc5 { ...but Leon is not afraid of ghosts any longer and he doesn't relinquish the control of the game until the end: } 28... Bxb2+ 29. Kc2 d4 30. Ne5 Bb4 { But now it is a bit difficult to get the pawn on c4 back. } 9. Nxc4? { This is already a bad move that should land White in difficulties. I see three games in my database, all won by Black. } (9. Bxf6 gxf6 10. Nxc4 c5) 9... Qd5 { Hitting the bishop and the knight and forcing White's reply... } 10. Bxf6 Nxc4 { The point! Black isn't forced to recapture on f6, but can make this stronger intermediate move, sacrificing the g-pawn, potentially. } 11. Bxc4? { This should already be losing. } (11. Qb3 { Seems to be the only move, but even after } 11... Nxe3 12. Qxb4 Nc2+ 13. Kd2 Nxb4 14. Nxd5 Nxd5 15. Bxg7 Rg8 16. Bh6 Bd7 { Black manages to come out with a small pull }) 11... Qxc4 (11... Qxg2 { Is arguably even stronger. After } 12. Rf1 gxf6 { Black just has a wonderful position }) 12. Bxg7 { Very optimistic } 12... Rg8 13. Be5 Bd7? { But this allows White to consolidate and get back into the game } (13... Rxg2 { Black could have taken the g2 pawn. He probably feared having his rook trapped on g2, but after } 14. Bg3 Bd7 15. Qc2 O-O-O 16. O-O-O { White is unable to explot it, really. }) 14. Bg3 Bc6 (14... h5 { Was more energetic }) 15. f3 { Now White is relatively safe and may hope to consolidate } 15... h5 (15... Bxc3+ { It was better to recapture the pawn and start thinking about equalizing... But then we probably wouldn't be analyzing this game }) 16. Kf2 Be7 { Insisting on the h4 push, but now Black's compensation is too vague } 17. Qe2 Qxe2+!? { An amazing decision. Jadro correctly judged that the absence of queens doesn't change the fact he has some practical compensation for the pawn } 18. Nxe2 O-O-O 19. h4 Rg7 20. Be5 f6 21. Bf4 e5!? { Very creative play, aiming to extract maximum out of the activity of his pieces and creating concrete problems for White. } 22. dxe5 Rd2 23. b4? { And here comes a serious mistake. Preserving the b-pawn from the rook attack is a luxury White can't permit himself } (23. Rhe1 Rxb2 24. e4 { Would maintain some advantage }) (23. e6 { Is also interesting }) (23. exf6 { Is not so good, due to } 23... Bxf6 24. Rhe1 Bxh4+ { White has merely allowed the activation of the bishop }) 23... fxe5 24. Bxe5 Rxg2+! { A great shot, that doesn't objectively lead to advantage, but to equality. At least. } 25. Kxg2 Rxe2+ 26. Kg3 Rxe3 { And now suddenly it is very difficult to play as White. } 27. Rhe1?! { A human, but not the optimal move. } (27. Rhf1 { White can't defend the f-pawn because his bishop on e5 is hanging } 27... Rxe5) (27. b5 { Seems like the only chance. The point is that after } 27... Bd5 28. Rhe1 Rxf3+ 29. Kh2 { The pawn on b4 isn't hanging, as in the game. }) 27... Rxf3+ 28. Kh2 Bxb4 { Now the position is highly unpleasant for White. In a practical game, it is almost impossible to defend this and Ipatov quickly collapsed. } 29. Rf1 Re3 30. Bf4 Re2+ 31. Kg3 Rg2+ 32. Kh3 Rg4 33. Bg3 Bd6 34. Bxd6 Bg2+ 35. Kh2 Bxf1 36. Bxc7? { White's position was difficult, but this doesn't help } (36. Bg3 { Was the only way of prolonging the resistance, although Black is probably technically winning, despite the opposite coloured bishops. }) 36... Kxc7 { And here Ipatov resigned.
