This week’s problem is another beautiful study taken from Dvoretsky’s book, Studies for Practical Players

As Dvoretsky himself wrote: “I begin with some studies in which a violent combinative struggle flares up, leading to a rapid and spectacular finish.”

White to play and win

White promotes the queen,  attacks the bishop and the rook, and threatens checks at e5 or d8. Black has  to find some counterplay} Bd6 $1 {Preventing all threats and setting up a  nasty discovered check} 2. Qxd6 $3 {[pgndiagram] The only move that doesn't  lose, but actually wins}   (2. Qd8+ Kf4 {Is just winning for Black; White  doesn't have a good check available}) 2... Rg2+ $1   (2... Qxd6 3. Ne4+ {Is  hopeless}) 3. Kxg2 Kh4+ {[pgndiagram] Taking the queen leads to stalemate,  while moving the king allows the capture on d6 without the fork on e4. There  is only one solution} 4. Ng4 $3 Qxd6 5. Ne5 {[pgndiagram] The point of this  wonderful study. White's threat of Nf3 is deadly} Qxe5 {There is nothing better  }   (5... Kg5 {Loses to} 6. Nf7+)   (5... Qd5+ {Loses to} 6. Nf3+)   (5... Everything is fine with this but when on move 6.. Qg5 and not ..Kg4 which leaves to mate for Black
1.b8=Q Bd6 2.Qxd6 Rg2+ 3.Kxg2 Kh4+ 4.Ng4 Qxd6 5.Ne5 Qxe5 6.Bd8+ Kg4

  I am sorry, but 6… Kg4 is impossible due to the pawn on h3
