So much has been written about this unplayed match. It is clear that Fischer would have had to revise his opening systems : with his life-long defense against e4, the Sicilian Najdorf, he did not win a single game against Spassky (one loss with many draws). As White against the Sicilian, his favorite move Bishop to c4 gave him nothing in the fourth game where Spassky was very close to winning. Just two examples. Unfortunately, like Tal said : ”We did not see Spassky in that match”. With Spassky in top form (version 1968/1969), the final score in 1972 would have been different.. It has been said that Fischer, on his way toward the world title, played against a generally tired opposition.. a pity he did not play against Korchnoi in the Candidates! (the only player he was afraid of, he said). This, in no way, diminishes his accomplishments. Karpov was the leader of the new generation with a very solid, unique chess style. Something new and unpredictable for Fischer, who liked to control everything.. a psychologically unstable genius against a very stable, hugely gifted opponent. Guess who has the advantage?
